About This Calculator

This Solar Power Calculator estimates the potential energy your solar array can collect in comparison to the amount of energy you consume. To determine your energy consumption levels, refer to your power bill, where your provider typically lists this in kilowatt-hours (kWh). If you receive a monthly bill, divide the total energy consumption by the number of days in that month or use the average of 30.4 days to calculate a daily consumption figure. Solar panels are never 100% efficient, so you may enter a slightly lower value in the Solar Array Size field for a more accurate calculation.

The blue line on the graph represents an estimate of your daily energy consumption, based on the normalized duck curve—a statistical average of energy usage normalized over 100,000 homes.

The yellow line indicates an estimate of the energy your solar array is expected to capture on a sunny day.

The green line shows the balance of energy import versus energy export throughout the day, assuming your energy provider supports net metering.
